Implementing codes and improving their enforcement

Rolled and built-up section steel structures

IS 800: 2007 (India)

"Indian Standard. General construction in steel - Code of practice"

Implemented in CYPE Connect (CYPE Connect Steel) and StruBIM Steel for analysing and checking steel connections.

Spanish structural code "Código Estructural"

"Código Estructural (Real Decreto 470/2021)".

Implemented in CYPECAD and CYPE 3D, for analysing and designing steel structures.

In the previous version (2022.c), this was already implemented in CYPECAD, CYPE 3D, Reinforced concrete cantilever walls, and Embedded retaining walls, for analysing and designing concrete structures; and in CYPE Connect Steel and StruBIM Steel for analysing and checking steel connections.

CYPE Architecture

Automatic colouring or texturing of the visible thickness of a wall with the colour or texture of the adjacent wall span

In this version of the program, the visible thickness of a wall can automatically be coloured or texturised with the colour or texture of the adjacent wall span. If necessary, this new function will be activated automatically when using one of the following tools: Colours, Typologies, Intersection solutions, Invert the colour of the faces of the wall, Move, Copy, Edit geometry and Copy properties.

Improvements in modifying the height of a level

As of version 2022.d, when the elevation of a level is modified, the programme moves all the architectural elements immediately above that elevation and extends or shrinks the elements located at the level below the modified elevation. The architectural elements that are extended or shrunk are: walls, curtain walls, louvres, columns and lift stops.

The program also modifies the elevation of the plan views associated with these levels.

User's manual

In version 2022.d, the program has a user manual available both in the "Help" menu of the program itself and from the "Available documents" section of the programme's tab in BIMserver.center "Store".

The manual will primarily be available in English and Spanish.

CYPECAD / CYPE 3D

Implementing Spanish code "Código Estructural"

Spanish code "Código estructural" (Real Decreto 470/2021) has been implemented for analysing and designing rolled and built-up section steel structures in CYPECAD and CYPE 3D.

In the previous version (2022.c), it was already implemented in CYPECAD, CYPE 3D, Reinforced concrete cantilever walls, and Embedded retaining walls, for analysing and designing concrete structures; and in CYPE Connect Steel and StruBIM Steel for designing and checking steel connections.

CYPECAD

Minor improvements and corrections

Version 2022.d of CYPECAD includes minor improvements and corrections of the program for certain cases:

  • An error that could occur in the "Punching shear - Summary of all the element checks" option if floor slabs were defined in the floor plan on several levels has been fixed.
  • An error that occurred during column design when there was no valid reinforcement diameter for a certain column due to the configuration of "Column reinforcement tables" has been fixed.
  • An error that could occur when importing BIM models depending on the concrete code selected by default has been fixed.
  • The warning concerning the impossibility of deleting a wall if another wall starts on top of it has been improved.
  • An error in the generation of cells of block walls that could occur when the thickness of the block walls is high has been solved.
  • An error that could occur in rare situations when checking the rotational stiffnesses of connections has been fixed.
  • An error in "Configure combinations for each limit state" in projects following the Spanish code "Código Estructural" has been fixed.
  • Certain error warnings in the beam frame design process have been improved. These warnings could be confusing if they arose in frames that had been rearranged.

CYPE Connect (CYPE Connect Steel)

Bar section information

Information about section geometry has been implemented in the label of the bars, where previously only the reference was shown.

Change in program name

CYPE Connect Steel is changing its name to CYPE Connect.

The reason for this change is that in previous versions, CYPE Connect Steel carried out the modelling and analysis of steel structural connections. As of version 2022.d, the program can also model and analyse structural timber elements as well as steel-to-timber connections.

Clash checking between plates and sections

Clash checking between plates and sections has been implemented. The mid surface of the plates or parts of the sections is checked to ensure that they do not intersect with another plate or section. This check is necessary to avoid inappropriate analytical models.

Structural timber element connections

As of version 2022.d, CYPE Connect can model and analyse connections between structural timber elements as well as steel-to-timber elements.

The new CYPE Connect feature makes designing steel-to-timber connections easier. In these connections, forces are transmitted from one piece of timber to another by means of metal elements (fasteners and connections). The connection between the different structural timber elements is achieved by means of dowel-type fasteners and auxiliary steel elements such as metal sheets or sections. The timber elements transmit their forces via the fasteners (bolts, dowels and screws) to all the other elements they are connected to (steel sections and sheets).

For modelling timber connections, the "Timber" operation has been implemented in the editing screen of a connection, which includes the tools "Bolts", "Dowels" and "Screws". In the rest of the operations available in the top bar of the program, the necessary modifications have been implemented for considering timber elements depending on the requirements of each operation.

After defining all the elements that make up the connection, the calculation can be carried out following the same procedure as for connections between steel sections.

The program analyses the stresses and deformations of each of the connection components using OpenSees© finite element software. With the acquired results, besides checking the steel elements in accordance with the selected steel code, the fasteners for timber are also checked according to the criteria in the chosen timber code.

For mechanical connections, dowel-type elements are an essential part of the load-bearing structure. By checking these fasteners in accordance with the requirements in the timber standard, we ensure that they are correctly designed to withstand and transmit the forces they will be subjected to. In version 2022.d, the criteria of Eurocode 5 (EN 1995-1-1) have been implemented.

In order for CYPE Connect to be able to model and analyse connections between structural timber elements, the user license must have the corresponding permission. For steel-to-timber connections, the user license must have permissions for both connection types. In any case, the OpenSees© calculation engine user license permission is required.

CYPE Connect / StruBIM Steel

Implementing codes

Version 2022.d implements the analysis and checking of steel connections according to the following standard:

  • IS 800: 2007 (India)
"Indian Standard. General construction in steel - Code of practice"

CYPELEC PV Systems

Analysing photovoltaic systems in the southern hemisphere

As of version 2022.d, when locations in the southern hemisphere (negative latitudes) are entered in CYPELEC PV Systems, the program will change the optimal orientation of the photovoltaic modules to the north, as well as rotate the panels anti-clockwise according to their orientation with respect to the north (α).

CYPEPLUMBING Water Systems

CYPEHVAC Ductwork

Minor improvements and corrections

Version 2022.d includes the following improvements and corrections of program errors that may occur in rare situations:

  • Dedicated outdoor air system
An installation with a dedicated outdoor air system is allowed in such a way that 100% of the adequately treated outside air is introduced into the assigned spaces.
  • Improvement when detecting air terminals in spaces
When some spaces were located inside other spaces, those containing air terminals were not detected correctly. As of version 2022.d, these spaces are now correctly detected.
  • Incomplete installation design
In some cases, the installation design was incomplete. Previously, the "Design" button had to be double-clicked to finish designing the system. Now it is fully designed from the very beginning.
  • Improvement in the "Copy" tool
As of version 2022.d, when elements selected with the "Copy" tool are placed in another part of the installation, the program checks whether there is an intersection with other ducts, in which case the ducts are cut automatically.

CYPETHERM EPlus

Connections between the frame and glazing in glazed openings

As of version 2022.d, in CYPETHERM programs with the EnergyPlus™ calculation engine, the thermal properties between the frame and glazing junction and between the frame and opaque panels or blind box can be defined (stated in standard EN ISO 10077-1:2020), in the definition of the opaque fraction for glazed openings and skylights.

The programs allow the users to define the length and linear thermal transmittance for the couplings in each type of opening, offering an assistant with common values to facilitate the definition.
