Export in CIS/2 format

CIS/2 (CIMsteel Integration Standards) is a standard interchange format created to facilitate the data flow between applications which intervene in the analysis, design and fabrication process of steel structures. However, these applications may interpret the information in the CIS/2 format differently.

CYPECAD, CYPE 3D and the Integrated 3D structures of CYPECAD allow users to export the structure in the CIS/2 format recommended by the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).

Advance Steel® is one of the applications related to the modelling of 3D steel structures for which the correct import of the CIS/2 format generated by CYPECAD, CYPE 3D and Integrated 3D structures of CYPECAD has been tested.

Exported elements

External loads acting on the structure can be entered in CYPECAD, CYPE 3D or the Integrated 3D structures, to obtain the optimum design in accordance with the selected code. Additionally, using the Joints IJoints IIJoints III and Joints IV modules, construction details of bolted and welded connections of rolled and welded I sections can be generated.

Using the CIS/2 format, all this can be exported to Advance Steel® and obtain a 3D model in the program with:

  • The simple rolled, welded and cold formed steel sections with constant cross-sections whose references coincide with the Advance Steel libraries.
  • If the licence available contains CYPE's "Export in CIS/2 format" and "Joints I" modules, the connections solved by the Joints I module will also be available in CIS/2 format.
  • If the licence available contains CYPE's "Export in CIS/2 format" and "Joints II" modules, the connections solved by the Joints II module will also be available in CIS/2 format.
  • If the licence available contains CYPE's "Export in CIS/2 format" and "Joints III" modules, the connections solved by the Joints III module will also be available in CIS/2 format.
  • If the license available contains CYPE's "Export in CIS/2 format" and "Joints IV" modules, the connections are solved by the Joints IV module will also be available in CIS/2 format.

This way, the project designed by CYPECAD, CYPE 3D or the Integrated 3D structures of CYPECAD will have all the facilities and possibilities offered by Advance Steel®: integrated operation in AutoCAD, project drawings, workshop drawings (detailing drawings), quantities, generation of CNC files for CNC machining, etc.

Export options

Export in CIS/2 format is carried out via File > Export > Export in CIS/2 format in both CYPECAD and CYPE 3D.

There are two options when exporting in CIS/2 format:

  • Only geometry and properties of nodes and bars ("Export in CIS/2 format" module not required)
This exports the geometry and steel sections of the structure mentioned in the "Exported elements" section to CIS/2 format. There is no need to analyse and design the structure before exporting. The export of connections is not included, so there is also no need to analyse connections before exporting.
To export to CIS/2 format with this option, the user license for CYPE programs does not need "Joints I", "Joints II", "Joints III", "Joints IV" or Export in CIS/2 format modules.
  • Complete detailing of the structure, including joints ("Export in CIS/2 format" and "Joints I", "Joints II", "Joints III", "Joints IV" modules required)
This exports the geometry of the work, its steel sections mentioned in the "Exported elements" section, and the detailing corresponding to the steel elements that have been analysed and designed by the "Joints I", "Joints II", "Joints III" and "Joints IV" modules (depending on the joint modules available in the license) to the CIS/2 format. The job and the joints must be analysed before exporting to the CIS/2 format.
  • To use this option, the user license must have the "Export to CIS/2 format" module, combined with one of the joint modules:
  • Using the Joints I. Welded module, the welded connections designed by this module are exported.
  • Using the Joints II. Bolted module, the bolted connections designed by this module are exported.
  • Using the Joints III. Welded module, the welded connections designed by this module are exported.
  • Using the Joints IV. Bolted module, the bolted connections designed by this module are exported.
  • Using the Joints V. Flat trusses with hollow structural sections.

Requirements for exporting in CIS/2 format

The following aspects should be taken into account for CYPECAD or CYPE 3D to export in CIS/2 format:
